CM Bhagwant Mann Punjab Govt finds 710 cell phones in prisons, VIP rooms will be converted into management blocks

New Delhi: The Punjab government has seized 710 mobile phones belonging to gangsters from prison premises across the state. Strict action has been taken against those who smuggle these phones into prison facilities across the state and some officers have been suspended as a result. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been formed to investigate the matter, adding that FIRs had also been filed in this regard, ANI reported. Mann added that all prison VIP rooms will be converted into prison management blocks to ensure the smooth functioning of prison staff.

Mann also said the officers involved will be held accountable for any negligence and strict action will be taken against them.

“With a view to ending VIP culture, all VIP rooms in prisons will be converted into prison management blocks to ensure the smooth functioning of prison staff. Relevant officers will be held accountable for negligence in prison and strict measures will be taken,” said Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann as quoted by ANI.

According to media reports, in March this year, Prison Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the state government would end the use of mobile phones by inmates.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday condemned the trend of gun culture and gangsterism ‘promoted’ by Punjabi singers in the wider public interest and urged them to refrain from stoking violence, hatred and animosity in society through their songs.
